When Howie plays live, you might find him playing his Gibson 335 or Fender Stratocaster on blues, folk/rock or jazz. Or you may find him outdoors with his LoPrinzi or Washburn acoustic setting up loops and accompanying himself on Native American flute. In the latter settings you will often see his wife, Debbie, lending her talent on rain stick, tambourine, shakers and chimes.

October Ember

October Ember

Sometimes playful, sometimes poignant, October Ember is comprised of Jennifer Dutiel & Kevin Holland, a multi-instrumentalist couple with a penchant for the quirky & the beautiful. A cross-pollination of folk, indie lounge, Euro cafe, art pop, & punk cabaret, their exploration of odd time signatures, neo-minimalist pulses, ethereal timbres, & vast dynamic spectra transmutes ontology into sound. With the wisps of softened reeds, dreamy guitars, & intricate percussion, they paint an aural tapestry for the film of existence.  They are often joined by the madly talented & delightful Troy Kunkler on drums & vibraphone.

With heartfelt & timeless ballads like “The End”, “The Thickets & the Fire”, & “My Devil’s the Storm”, love, loss, & redemption permeate the OE oeuvre. Their songs range in topic from kindness, humanism, mortality, & love to spaceships, devils, light waves, & hallucinations.  A spark forged in the flames of Cohen & Cummings, their lyricism delves into the abyss of human frailty, but surfaces to meet the light ashore.

Natural genre-hoppers, OE are equally adept at writing love songs as they are fringe fare.  From the sci-fi homage space opera “Pale Blue Dot”, to the ballad of an ill-fated prostitute in the Deadwood-themed “The Gem”, to the psychedelic exploration spawned in “Spore”, the band is never limited to one style.

October Ember formed & launched their first self-titled EP in 2017.  They have been a staple in their local music scene of Columbus, OH - playing venues, restaurants, bars, house concerts, & outdoor festivals.  They were featured on the Emmy-award winning television show Broad & High in 2020.  Their fan base grew globally via streaming services with the release of a double-EP in 2020.  The next two years saw the release of 11 new singles along with companion videos.
In the Fall of 2021, OE began a dedicated live-streaming schedule of three times per week on Twitch, sometimes broadcasting for up to 11 hours straight.  They have built a worldwide following, & regularly play their own originals, covers, improvisations, soundscapes, read poetry, & discuss art, music, philosophy, & existential matters with their incredible online community.

They recently opened Café Cashew, a picnic table in their front yard serving the hippest squirrel & bird wildlife in their local scene.

Matthew Morgan and Jeff Hauf

Matthew Morgan and Jeff Hauf

Matthew Morgan is on a mission to prove to the world that alternative folk can be embraced by the LBTQIA+ community, that a singer-songwriter from the heartland can compose words expressing anti-racist sentiment, and that a great sounding country song can carry a deeper message without relying on overused and outdated tropes! Refusing to be labeled, or pigeon-holed into genderized, racialized, or any other “-ized” stereotypes he joins the ranks of simliar progressive singer songrwriters such as Orville Peck, Crys Matthews, and Willy Carlisle.

A powerful force in the current milieu of social justice songwriters his warm tenor voice floats above delicate arrangements conveying a feeling of great depth and his songs feel less like stories than paintings. Popdose writes, “There's something significant about a poignant troubadour who leaves his heart on the table and bares his soul without reserve. The kind of voice and talent that's hardly born, let alone hearalded these days.”

Matthew released his debut CD with Chicago’s acoustic indie label, CAUDog Records in 2012 immediately going on tour around the Midwest and Southern US states in cohort with his band, The Lost Brigade. The touring resulted in sold out shows headlining at Chicago's famous Double Door nightclub and House of Blues and opportunities to share the stage with more notorious acts at music festivals including opening for Dave Davies (The Kinks) and Company of Thieves at Taste of Lincoln Ave (Chicago) and SXSW (Austin) in 2013.

Seeking a more introspective sound to his song craft Morgan parted ways with The Lost Brigade in 2014 and recorded a new solo EP that was released independently the following year. While The Lost Brigade's sound was indebted to contemporary indie rockers like Wilco and The Decemberists, the “Empathy for Inanimate Objects” EP calls to mind the happier moments of Elliott Smith or the open-ended ponderings of Tom Brousseau. Empathy as a whole was very well received and Morgan garnered his first published reviews and the inclusion in the "Best of 2015" by the Nashville Music Guide. A new “Family” band was formed and the empathy tour resulted in venues of greater status including an opening slot for Ben Ottewell (of Gomez) and a chance to debut at Chicago's premiere music club, The Metro.

However, things were about to change radically in both good and bad ways. A new relationship would blossom into marriage, but the joyfulness of newfound love would be  stifled by the grief of losing a parent to illness, further compounded by the global pandemic. Like many artists, Matthew would take this time off to look inward and take stock of the things that really matter. The result of this reflection would be a brand new album, 'Timepiece' composed of songs crafted as a testament; a time capsule to document the highs and lows of living through one of the most challenging and significant periods in modern history.

Willie Phoenix

Willie Phoenix

Whether he’s playing haunting blues, straight forward rock, garage band noise or psychedelic fusion – Willie Phoenixdelivers. Willie’s career has spanned decades - and so has his passion - never stopping, never failing to deliver jaw-dropping performances with an undeniable edge.

Born in Camden Alabama, Willie says he entered the world “wrapped in a burning southern flag” – referencing his love for the blues. Growing up, he listened to all of the greats. They were all there on the 78/45 rpm records played on his family’s Magnavox record player:  Muddy Waters, Lightening Hopkins, Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooker and country greats Hank Williams, Buck Owens and Jerry Reed. Willie remembers thinking the guitars, harmonicas and voices possessed the same echoing, lonely sound as the midnight trains that rumbled past his Marion, Ohio home. It was there, in Marion,  where he grew up, went to school and cut his teeth on early British invasion blues and rock n’ roll.

Willie has never looked back. He learned to play the blues from his father, bluesman Willie James Creagh Sr. who played with big names like Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson II (Willie’s godfather).  Willie says, “I had a certain knack for writing songs. I started playing guitar, grabbed a few of my mates, formed a band and made a lot of wonderful noise.” Willie has worked clubs and concert halls from Toronto Canada straight to the west coast neon lights of Hollywood. He’s performed with many greats, including Muddy Waters, BB King, rock n’ roll’s Ramones and The Talking Heads – to name only a few.

A prolific songwriter, Willie has released more albums than can be mentioned - but most recently he's released Magic in the Dark (2022), four albums in 2021 (Heavy Bubblegum3 Chords Maybe 4Poster Noise, Bomb Shelter 13).  Other recent works include This Ain't 1968 (2020), Backstage Rain (2019), Garage Blues Band (2017), Blues My Soul (2016) and Captain Psychedelic (2015), all released through 1978 Records.

Though he's a very humble guy, if you're lucky you might get Willie to tell you about how the City of Columbus honored "the legendary rock god Willie Phoenix" by renaming 16th and High Street “Willie Phoenix Way” (October, 2020) or about being inducted into the 2022 Columbus Blues Alliance Hall of Fame (October 2022).

When not on the road, Willie’s usually cutting sides at Eastman Studios. You can probably find Willie and his band (Steven Day Carter on drums and Chuck Birchfield on bass) performing into the wee hours of the morning somewhere in town or at Eldorado’s - their favorite underground juke joint in the Graceland district of Columbus.

Willie once told a friend, “Rock n’ roll has saved me from the blues of silence.” Long live rock n’ roll!

Dogwood Road

Tyler Moore (fiddle, mandolin, vocals) and Karl Wohlwend (guitar) are both veterans on America’s Irish music scene. As members of the bands Homeland, Knot Fibb’n, and Two2Many, they have toured throughout the US, playing in pubs, concert halls and festivals in a dozen states. They can be heard playing on at least 10 full-length CD recordings. Tyler and Karl began playing together in the Ohio-based Two2Many in 2012, and spun off as a duo act in 2014. Their sound has been described as “modern trad,” reflecting their ability to bring the wealth of their varied experiences to bear on their approach to traditional music. Dogwood Road has feet firmly planted in the respect for the past, while at the same time they acknowledge the spirit of today. High energy jigs and reels, fun arrangements of traditional songs, and an emerging repertory of original music are all features of a Dogwood Road show.

Lauren Brooks Artist Reception

Join us for a night celebrating the artwork of Lauren Brooks.

Artist Statement

I am Lauren Brooks from Columbus, Ohio. I have been a visual storyteller since I was young. No matter where life has taken me, I always come back to the paper and canvas. My work is inspired by nature and I find beauty in all aspects of life. Through bold colors and whimsical content, I interpret the world around me. I enjoy acrylic paints, ink, alcohol ink, charcoal and photography.

My acrylic paintings have been shown at the 83 Gallery and “C-Note” at Junctionview Gallery in 2008. I have had photography featured for auction at the “Sawhira” fundraiser at the Columbus Museum of Art in 2008. I have had photography pieces hung in “All that Photography” shows at Madlab 2008 and 2009. In addition, I have had art booths at the local CrestFest 2018 and 2019 and the Day of the Dead Columbus festival 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. My alcohol ink series was selected for an exhibit named “Art of a Pandemic” at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center in 2021. I served as a panelist for the “Art of a Pandemic” to discuss how the pandemic impacted my art for the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. I also had acrylic art selected for the “Te Recordamos” exhibit at Global Gallery in 2021 and 2022. In April 2022, I had alcohol ink paintings curated by 83 Gallery at Blockfort for the exhibit “Death, Taxes and 83 Gallery” in 2022 and at two exhibits at Brothers Drake Meadery. I have had alcohol ink paintings on display for an exhibit called “Art Heals” for the Franklin County Treasurer’s Office in 2022.
