May Art Opening: "Weavings from the Somali Bush"

  • Global Gallery 3535 North High Street Columbus, OH, 43214 United States

Join us for our May Gallery Show opening night! We are featuring the art of Wilo and Salado, two women who grew up in the bush (countryside) of southern Somalia. Somali pastries and tea will be available for your enjoyment. There will also be artist demonstrations!

About the art:
This display of weavings celebrates the culture and the ancient craft of women living in the countryside of Somalia. The two artists, Wilo and Salado, share a love of weaving kabads (weavings) that are traditionally used to decorate and insulate a home and as mats for sleeping and praying.

The process of weaving begins with separating a burlap rice sack strand by strand, twisting 5 or 6 of these at a time and weaving them into 6-inch sections.

These sections are then submerged in dye. After they are rinsed and dried, the weaving begins - all by hand, on their laps, using no tools and no frame. Colorful yarn, old dresses torn into strips, and beads can be woven into the kabad.

We hope to see you there!
